Oh What They Say...

As I mentioned before I work for a company with salespeople. I have found that there is not necessarily one type of sales personality that works better than another. We have the kiss ups, the smooth talkers and the ones who know no bounds.

Here is an example of something one sales person said:

  • Sales manager: "Hi, is "" there?"
  • The person on the other line : "No, unfortunately she no longer works here."
  • Sales manager: "Really! I'm glad to hear that!" (He did not like this woman)

Another example:

  • Sales manager: "How you been?"
  • The person on the other line: "Good"
  • Sales manager: "Great... well, I'm sure you've been missing my calls."

This particular sales person has been with our company for over a year and seems to be doing great. So... even if you say rude things on the phone while you are trying to sell a service it doesn't matter because people will still buy from you.

Saying all kinds of things...

Today during an interview a candidate said to a recruiter:
  • “The study of artificial intelligence has done funny things to my brain”

She [the recruiter] couldn't help but laugh out loud after this was said - the candidate said this seriously.

Truly, there are some things that you really should keep to yourself!

I just thought it would look good....

A caller just called in to our Finance and Accounting line:

  • Caller: Can I talk to a cell manager?
  • Receptionist: Do you mean a staffing manager?
  • Caller: Yes
  • Receptionist: Are you looking to employ someone or are you looking for employment?
  • Caller: Looking for employment.
  • Receptionist: The person you would want to speak to is "" and he is currently on the line right now, would you like his voicemail?
  • Caller: Actually, I just wanted his full name.
  • Receptionist: May I ask the purpose of this call?
  • Caller: I am working on my resume.
  • Receptionist: Have you worked with us before?
  • Caller: No
  • Receptionist: Why do you need his name?
  • Caller: I thought it would look good on my resume.
  • Receptionist: I do not think that is a good idea, goodbye. *hangs up*

Apparently, we have a liar on our hands. Like a business wouldn't check your employment history.

Crunchy

One thing that bugs me far above many other things is inadequate table manners. People who chew with their mouth open, wipe their face on their sleeves, and talk with food in their mouth make me feel a little crazy.

Recently, I have found that "crunching" like chips or whatever really sets me on edge. There are certain people at work who eat chips, or crunchy snack foods and I can hear them a good 15 feet away. I cringe when I hear this sound, especially if they come near me. I cannot handle it! Stop the crunching, or learn to chew quieter!

In my friends words, we will call her G Buddy, my peeve makes me feel "crunchy." I do feel a little bad for being so annoyed about this, maybe some people just cannot chew more quietly than others. We could call it a physical inability.

Economic Woes

2008 has brought a lot of fear and uncertainty to this country, my family and me. I have to consciously make a decision to not be worried about it all, every day. Over this last past week the economy has brought changes for me in a few ways.
  • The Band: My honey's band is now unsigned. The label dissolved because under the new Presidential administration it would not get as many tax breaks as before. I personally think this is a lame reason to stop something that you have your heart in. My heart was not in the label, nor was the bands, but the people affiliated with the label had no idea this was coming. The people who started the label surely must have done so out of ideas birthed in their hearts. I guess money speaks loud and clear. I think it is really too bad for the people employed and affiliated. Now we need to get cracking on different promotions for the band.
  • My Job: My work let go of 5 people last week. As far as I know, this was not entirely due to their numbers but direction from above to cut some people to save money. Who really knows if I will be kept because of the ratio of admin to staffing managers. God will take care of me. This week things seem to be picking up for us here though... very good.
  • The Web Business: (www.slyd.us) Overall, 2008 was not a bad year when you realize that most start up businesses do not make any money in their first year (especially in a year of recession). My honey's business made money in 2008, and they have already invoiced 1/3 of their profits from last year in 2009. Some people out there have money to invest in things. Plus websites are a great way to get a companies name and product out there.

I really feel like God is doing something. In everything going on I know that he has his hands in it and he will take care of me and others. I have to remember that if he clothes the birds and flowers of the field then he surely will take care of us, and he has. Even if people are getting laid off around me, labels are dissolving, and things might look uncertain as far as new business goes, I know thinks are ultimately going to be okay. God is good!

Childish Behavior

I work in a building that consists of 56 stories, and the fastest elevators on the west coast. Today I pushed all of the buttons on the elevator before I got out. It is funny the things that burn deep inside of you that you want to do, versus the amount of time it actually takes you to do it. Congratulations to my desires they won!

I did reminds me of Buddy on "Elf" when he gets into the Empire State Building and pushes all of the buttons in the elevator on his way up because he thinks they are pretty.

You can call me Buddy :)

Resolutions

For the past 27 years I have been in existence I have not made a New Years Resolution that I can remember. There are a couple of reasons that I have not... First, I have never really thought that hard about it, and Second, I have always viewed "resolutions" as superficial things that people give up quickly so why make one?
This changed about 2 weeks ago while sitting around the table at Palominos, when a staffing manager asked "So what are everyone 's New Years resolutions?" I was taken aback as I had never thought about it, but quickly needed to come up with something. While the others were sharing I listened to what they had to say and quickly formulated my own thoughts on the subject.
I shared that I wanted to get into a fitness plan involving weights and aerobics, I had done these in the past and had never stuck with them (they were not resolutions either but feelings). This was a great resolution as I have been wanting to loose some weight, and get toned for the past few years. Then I shared that I would like to get more organized in my personal life. Getting more organized here would include: setting priorities such as my personal relationship with God, my husband and others, and that I would like to organize all the clutter in my house so there is a "official" place for everything.
While I quickly came up with these ideas I have not forgotten them and am now thinking about them this week. I have decided that I will start my fitness resolution tomorrow morning 1.13.2009, and will get up a whole hour earlier to begin my routine (this would put my wake up at 6am). My plan so far is to jog for 25 minutes with a 5 minute warm up and warm down, and then come home and work out my lower body then stretch. On the off days I plan to work out my upper body so I can get rid of these flabby arms.
I have not come up with a plan for the organization of my personal life, but am sure with the increased blood flow to my brain during my jog tomorrow morning some bright ideas will "pop" up.
